Catching the Fall: There’s Technology for That

Written by Simrin Pardal

You’re walking slower than you use to. You find that you lose your balance easily, and you can’t walk for quite as long as you use to. Seem familiar?

You may be at risk for falls.

Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall.1

What if there were a technology which could call for help the moment they hit the ground? Or even before that?

Fall detection technologies use a variety of sensors and algorithms to identify falls and notify caregivers and/or emergency services. A range of fall detection technologies exist, from wearable devices and environmental sensors to use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Some of the most common fall detection technologies are wearable devices such as smartwatches or necklaces which use motion sensors to detect falls.

Fall detection technology can also be integrated into your home. Use of environmental sensors integrated into the home such as detection of floor vibrations, lighting patterns, and energy radar waves can also be used for fall detection. These may be the right fit for someone that forgets to wear their fall detection device.

Moreover, fall detection technology continues to evolve. AI and machine learning-based systems use sensor data such as video monitoring from a camera-based system to analyse user behaviour and patterns, which can help with early detection of falls.2 These systems also have the potential to improve the accuracy of falls detection and thereby reduce false alarms.

With greater advancements in the systems of fall detection, technology also brings concerns of greater costs. The costs of fall detection technology vary widely based on the type of system and features.

While certain technologies may have a one-time purchase cost associated with them, others may have a set-up or installation fee and require an ongoing subscription. It is also important to consider fees associated with monitoring, maintenance/replacement, and software updates.

Timely detection of falls can allow for timely response of falls, which can help minimize the severity of the injuries from falls. Fall detection technologies can provide peace of mind to not only you, but also your loved ones.

At GLA Rehab, we understand the importance of feeling safe when you move. Our OTs and PTs can assess your current mobility level and assist with identifying mobility aids, such as walkers and wheelchairs. They can also provide education on falls prevention and what to do if you fall.
